International Conference on Innovations in Food Processing Technology and Engineering
This conference will be held at the Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok, Thailand, from 11 to 13 December 2002. Organized by the Processing Technology Program in the School of Environment, Resources and Development, Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, it seeks to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of recent developments in food processing technology and engineering and for the dissemination of relevant information among scientists, engineers, technicians, and other professionals in the region.
There are signs of a demand for large quantities of high quality foods in the Asia-Pacific region. To meet the needs of domestic consumption as well as export, there has been a rapid growth in food processing which has necessitated a greater understanding of food processing operations for ensuring food safety and quality. Therefore, the utilization of existing technologies and adoption of new innovative technologies continues to demand greater attention. The conference will address the following subjects:
- Food Processing Technology
- Physical Properties of Foods
- Thermal Processing and Preservation
- Non-Thermal Processing
- Food Safety
- Food Packaging
- Postharvest Preservation and Processing
- Nutraceutical and Functional Foods
- Novel Technologies in Food Handling, Processing and Transport
- Information Technology Applications in the Food Industry
- Automation in the Food Industry

90 th Indian Science Congress (ISC) - 2003 on "Frontier Science and Cutting-Edge Technologies"
The 90th Session of the Indian Science Congress (ISC) will be held at Bangalore University, Bangalore, Karnataka, India from 3 to 7 January 2003. This Congress will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India.
In order to advance and promote the cause of sciences, the Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA) has been organising annual Indian Science Congresses since 1914, where diverse academic deliberations are held on various topics related to a focal theme, spread over 16 different Science Sections including the Engineering Sciences.
The following sub-themes related to "Frontier Science and Cutting- Edge Technologies" have been chosen for the Symposia of ISC 2003:
- Concurrent Engineering - Challenges in Product Development.
- Engineering Interventions to Make India Globally Competitive in the WTO.
- Frontier Cutting Edge Engineering Technologies for Infra structural Development
International ISHS Symposium on "Managing Greenhouse Crops in Saline Environment"
The International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS), the Commission of Protected Cultivation, and the University of Pisa will hold this symposium in Pisa, Italy, from 9 to 12July 2003.
In many regions protected horticultural crops have to cope with increasing salinisation of irrigation water. High salinity of the supply water has detrimental effects on soil fertility and reduces crop growth and yield. Nevertheless, moderate salt concentration in the root zone may improve the quality of horticultural products; in some areas, salinity is not a constraint, but has become a tool to increase economic profitability of some horticultural crops.
The Symposium aims to foster the exchange of scientific and technological information regarding the management of greenhouse crops in regions affected by salinity of soil and/or irrigation water. This knowledge is essential to develop proper cropping techniques and effective marketing strategies to run sustainable greenhouse horticulture in the presence of irrigation water of poor quality. In particular, the following issues will be addressed:
- Crop Ecophysiology
- Water and Nutrient Management
- Soilless Culture
- Climate Control
- Water Treatment Technology
- Environmental Implications
- Economics
The papers to be presented will be published in Acta Horticulturae before the beginning of the Symposium. Deadlines:
Submission of abstracts 30 November 2002
Submission of papers 15 January 2003
Submission of revised papers 15 April 2003

4th International Symposium Agroenviron 2004 on the
"Role of Multi-Purpose Agriculture in Sustaining Global Environment"
Organised by the University of Udine, Italy, the symposium Agroenviron 2004 will be held from 20 to 24 October 2004. This will be the fourth symposium of the Agroenviron series. In 1998 the University of Agriculture of Faisalabad (Pakistan) organized the first Agroenviron Symposium and it proved to be an important platform for sharing ideas, exchanging knowledge, and developing international links between organizations involved in agro-environmental issues. Two more symposia have been organised, one hosted by Trakya University, Tekirdag (Turkey) in 2000 and one by the National Authority for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences (NARSS), Cairo (Egypt) in 2002
The organizers of this event hope that the series will continue in the future and provide an instrument for involving more and more scientists, engineers, planners, institutions, and countries in agro-environmental issues for sustaining the environment of this globe. The symposium will certainly provide an insight for the scientists in today's burning issues related to agriculture, and it should help to choose the right directions for the future in sustainable agriculture in this millennium.
The topics proposed for presentation in Udine include:
- Land, Water, and Air Pollution in Agricultural Areas
- Precision Agriculture and Yield Forecasting
- Landscape Ecology
- Forestry and Range Land Management
- Climate Changes and Global Agricultural Environment
- Biotechnology and Agricultural Biodiversity
- Desertification and Land Degradation Control
- Agricultural Waste Reuse and Field Management
- Wetland and Coastal Ecology in Humid Environment
- RS/GIS Techniques in Agriculture
- Current Advances in Restoration of Rural Areas for Sustainability
