SHAME: Hunger and Malnutrition 2002
29-31 October 2002
This conference, organised by the West African Society for Agricultural Engineering [WASAE] and the Nigerian Institution of Agricultural Engineers [NIAE], will be held from 29-31 October 2002 at the ECOWAS Secretariat, Asokoro, Abuja, Nigeria. It will deal with the theme "Food Security and Poverty Alleviation in West Africa: Options and Action Plan". It will be supported by the Federal Government of Nigeria, by FAO, and by CTA.
More than 800 million people in developing countries were undernourished at the beginning of the 1990s and several tens of millions of people are dependent on emergency food aid each year although such aid is falling sharply. West African countries must robustly respond to the challenges of globalization and the associated global pressures of trade liberalization, first by gaining deep understanding of the conceptual issues and then employing technology and management sciences to fashion out enduring solutions (knowledge and innovation based) and realistic action plans that will make them competitive in the increasingly hostile new world order.
The conference, in the course of which an action plan for the region will be drawn up, will consist of a full day of plenary sessions to be addressed by globally respected invited speakers, of technical presentations of relevant research results, and of a complimentary exhibition of food and industrial products. West African Presidents and Heads of Government as well as International Development Agencies and NGOs are expected to attend the conference.
In detail, the conference will deal with the following sub-themes:
- Policy Issues and Conceptual Framework
- Economics, Economic and Technological Development
- Food Production, Processing and Preservation
- Globalization, Competitiveness and Food Security
- Regional Integration and Trade Liberalization
- Energy, Agricultural Mechanization and Food Security
- Environmental Issues and Food Security
- Sustainable Soil and Water use Management
- Agricultural and Rural Engineering Infrastructures
- Private Sector/NGO Initiatives and Poverty Alleviation

Visas are required for all nationalities, with the exception of ECOWAS citizens. The International Conference Committee will assist with visas for all participants on request.
