11th World Fertiliser Congress of CIEC: Fertilisation for Sustainable Plant Production and Soil Fertility

This World Congress will be held at the University of Gent, Faculty of Agricultural and Applied Biological Sciences, Gent, Belgium on 7-13 September 1997.

In every land use system plant nutrients are continuously removed from the soil. Thus, soil gets in danger, regarding structure, humus decay and erosion if these nutrients are not replaced by fertilisation in an adequate way. But, under conditions of surplus food production, soils are often overfertilised or treated in a one-sided manner, so that the nutrient equilibrium in the soil is disturbed. Especially the use of waste and waste waters as fertilising materials is often harmful when not applied under control. A similar critical situation refers to the application of animal waste from industrial livestock production.

At the end of the 20th century the world population may be about 6 billion and a multiple of that number of domestic animals to be fed. This means a tremendous removal of plant nutrients from the soil year by year. Nutrient recycling processes from all kinds of fertilisers, suitable waste and waste waters therefore deserve highest priority. The aim of the 11th CIEC World Congress is to make man more aware of these for the survival of human beings decisive problems.

There will be six sections viz.

1. Nutrient output by food and non-food plant products

2. Nutrient losses to water

3. Nutrients to and from the atmosphere

4. Nutrient inputs by fertilising materials

5. Nutrient dynamics in the soil-plant system

6. Legislative measures on fertilisation.
