CIGR Newsletter No 56
XVth CIGR World Congress-CIGR/ASAE Joint Congress
July 29 - August 1, 2002, Chicago, USA
„Engineering for a sustainable world"
Invitation from ASAE President
The 2002 Annual International Meeting of the ASAE will be held jointly with the XVth World Congress of the International Commission of Agricultural Engineering (CIGR) on July 28-31, 2002 in Chicago. This is an invitation to participate and a call for papers for this important meeting.

A total of 187 technical session topics have been identified and are included in this call for papers. These topics cover the broad range of agricultural, food, biological, and environmental engineering and related subjects of interest to ASAE and CIGR members.
Organization of integrated technical sessions to include both ASAE and CIGR participants offers a unique opportunity to present results of research and application, and to discuss important engineering problems and issues from a global perspective. We also welcome the Club of Bologna, an organization dealing specifically with worldwide agricultural mechanization, for a special meeting on this occasion.
Because of the breadth of both the subject matter to be addressed and the background of the participants, it is anticipated that the technical content of this joint meeting will be exceptionally strong. A full version of the technical papers presented at the meeting will be available to the meeting participants on CD-ROM. The papers will also be available online in ASAE's electronic publication library.
In addition to an outstanding technical program, there will be a keynote address from an internationally recognized speaker, award presentations for both ASAE and CIGR, sessions for Continuing Professional Development, Preprofessional (Student) Activities, and a full program of activities and tours for Spouses and Guests. A number of excellent pre and post meeting technical tours are also being arranged.
ASAE is a 9000 member international society for engineering in agriculture, food and biological systems. In addition to the annual meeting, ASAE organizes and sponsors a number of specialty conferences each year. The 2001 annual international meeting in Sacramento, California had a total attendance of over 1650 participants from 40 countries.
On behalf of ASAE, it is my pleasure to invite you to Chicago to attend and participate in what we are sure will be an outstanding International meeting of CIGR and ASAE.

Invitation from CIGR President
The XVth World Congress of the International Commission of Agricultural Engineering (CIGR) will be a joint meeting with ASAE and will take place on the occasion of the 95th ASAE Annual International Meeting from July 28 to July 31, 2002 in Chicago, USA.

In order to promote this important joint congress, the CIGR's seven technical sections covering the broad field of agricultural engineering will collaborate with ASAE in the organization of the meeting. In addition CIGR and the affiliated Club of Bologna will host a meeting on agricultural mechanization during this significant event. CIGR will also be providing updated information about the congress using both its newsletter and its web page.
CIGR is a global network representing regional and national agricultural engineering societies from more than 70 countries. It works to improve cooperation and exchange of experience among agricultural engineers as well as to enhance technology transfer and rural development.
CIGR congresses are regularly organized in collaboration with the regional and national associations and offer the occasion to present the latest progress in the different fields of agricultural engineering and its application to the development of world agriculture and the protection of the environment.
The last three World Congresses of CIGR were successfully organized in Europe (Milan, Italy, 1994), Africa (Rabat, Morocco, 1998) and Asia (Tsukuba, Japan, 2000). The coming CIGR congress on the American continent (Chicago, USA, 2002), thanks to the great experience of ASAE, promises to be an outstanding scientific and technical international event harmoniously integrated with a very interesting and attractive program of social activities and technical tours.
CIGR, which maintains an excellent collaboration with ASAE, is very pleased to mobilize its worldwide membership toward a massive contribution to this joint congress.
On behalf of the International Commission of Agricultural Engineering, I am pleased to invite you to attend and contribute to this first combined CIGR-ASAE international congress of the 21st century and to join us as we address engineering issues for a sustainable world.
I look forward to seeing you in Chicago in July 2002.
EL Houssine BARTALI
CIGR President 2001-2002

Preparation of Written Papers
All presenters (lecture and poster) are encouraged to prepare papers for distribution at the meeting. Presentations not accompanied by a written paper are generally considered to be less thoroughly prepared. If you do not prepare a paper for distribution, you miss the opportunity to have your paper included in the CD-ROM, indexed in leading computer databases and made available in libraries.
Since there are many concurrent sessions, written papers also provide for a more effective distribution of knowledge and technology for those who cannot attend your session. Specific instructions for the preparation of your written paper can be found at the ASAE web site: http://www.asae.org/pubs/templates/information2.html
Publication Rights & Procedures
Presenters are encouraged to submit their meeting papers for publication in the CIGR E-Journal, in Transactions of the ASAE, in Applied Engineering in Agriculture or the Journal of Agricultural Safety & Health. These peer-reviewed journals offer an additional audience for the distribution of knowledge and technology.
For information on how to submit texts to the CIGR E-Journal, see http://agen.tamu.edu/cigr/. For information about how to submit a manuscript to an ASAE journal, call ASAE at 616.429.0300, send a FAX to 616.429.3852, or send an e-mail to hq@asae.org, or write to ASAE, 2950 Niles Road, St. Joseph, MI 49085-9659.
Obtaining the Proposal Form Electronically
For a list of session topics, send an e-mail to am2002sessions@asae.org
There is a presentation proposal form included in this newsletter (see last page). You can obtain an electronic copy from ASAE by e-mail or from the World Wide Web (WWW). When you send an e-mail message to am2002form@asae.org, you will receive a message that contains the ASCII text version of the form. A copy of the form is available for download at: http://www.asae.org/meetings/am2002/form.html (Follow the instructions on the screen). If you send a copy of the form electronically to your Session Organizer, be sure to keep a copy for yourself in case it needs to be sent again later.
Please be sure to keep the number of characters per line in your submission to 80 or less so it can be displayed and printed on standard width devices. Given that the proposal is relatively short and does not contain special characters, it should not be necessary to uuencode or otherwise compress the file to send it. When submitting the form electronically to a Session Organizer, it is probably best to include it as part of the body of the message rather than as an attachment. If you wish to send the proposal as an attached word processing document, you should contact your Session Organizer.
You can mail or fax a paper form or submit electronically, but please do not do both.
Select the most appropriate topic session in which you are planning to submit and submit your proposal to that session organizer. Your proposal form should not be submitted to more than one organizer.
